Why Face Oil Is Not Working For You

Close up 1080You heard Face Oil is the best way to get glowing, more youthful skin. You invested in a great Face Oil. You see no difference. You now feel you’ve wasted your time and money on Face Oil.

Most likely, it’s not Face Oil that’s the problem (and no, it’s not because you are an Oily skin type). Well matched Face Oil with proper application can boost your current routine with added phytonutrients or completely replace your water based moisturizers.

If you are not using Face Oil, you definitely should add one to your routine.

The key to success with Face Oil is matching the right oil to your skin type and applying it correctly.  Here are some reasons Face Oil may not be working for you.

You are not using the Right Oil.

Not all oils were created equal. Choose quality oil. Yes, quality oils cost more – but this is one of those times when the added expense really makes the difference. Look for natural oils that include whole leaf flower, leaf, seed, nut, fruit and berry extracts.

More really is more when it comes to Face Oil. Look for ingredient listings that include a variety of seed oils, botanical extracts, and essential oil blends that have a skin care purpose (not just there to smell pretty). Every single ingredient in your skin care product should serve a skin care purpose.

Acorns 1080Natural ingredients have a synergistic relationship with skin, working to address a variety of skin types and issues. Do not use synthetic oils, such as mineral oil – they are not natural and will not give the same results to your skin as natural oils.

Read your ingredient label carefully, far too many companies include synthetic oils such as mineral oil or petroleum jelly to lighten the ingredient cost. Just because the front label says the name of a good natural ingredient  (for example Natural Argon Oil, Jojoba, etc.) does not mean that there are only natural ingredients in the formulation or even that natural oil is the main ingredient.

Oily and acne prone skin types tend to shy away from using Face Oil. This is a mistake. These skin types can benefit greatly from the right oils.

Opt for formulations made primarily with lighter oils and oils naturally high in linoleic acid such as Sunflower, Grape Seed, Evening Primrose, Jojoba, Tea Tree, and Almond. Oily skin types should avoid heavy oils or oils high in oleic fatty acids, which are believed to clog pores. These would include Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Wheat Germ Oil, and Sesame Oil.

The one area we all have in common is the eye area – choose an oil specifically formulated for the tender eye area.

You are not applying your Skin Care products in the right order.

There are a variety of professional opinions on what order to apply skin care products, especially when it comes to Face Oil.

The thinking goes like this: If you apply Face Oil first it gives the oil a chance to sink in more deeply before applying serums and moisturizers on top of it. If you apply Face Oil after your serums and moisturizers the Face Oil will work to seal in all of the beneficial ingredients from your other products.

If you are using a combination of Face Oil with water based creams and serums – As a formulator, I know that water based creams and serums include a wax-type emulsifier that works to bind ingredients together. This wax can form an barrier layer that lays on skin and actually prevents oils and “good” ingredients from sinking in.

I recommend applying oil based skin care products first on clean skin and topping with water based products because the waxy emulsifier layer found in water based products can prevent oils from sinking in properly. You can tell if a product contains water by looking at the ingredient list. If it contains water its a safe assumption that it also contains a waxy emulsifier ingredient.

If you are using only oil based skin care products – Apply serums and treatment oils first, then finish with a layer of moisturizing Face Oil. For example, if you are using Three Leaf Beauty products you could apply Perfect Spot Treatment to break-outs and top with Nourish Moisturizing Oil.

You are not applying Face Oil correctly.

When applying any product to your face avoid “Rubbing”. Rubbing on your skin pulls and stresses skin. It also does not give the product a chance to absorb properly because you are pushing it back and forth across your skin. This is especially true for Face Oils and Oil Treatments which need to be allowed to sink in to work effectively.

pressing face oils 1080The best way to apply Face Oil is to warm a few drops of oil between hands or on the pads of your fingertips before gently pressing to your face. For treatment oils I place a drop of Treatment Oil on the pad of my index finger and press the oil onto the area the Treatment Oil is meant to address.

For Face Moisturizing Oil I place a few drops of oil in my left palm and gently press together with my right hand to disperse between my hands. I then hold my hands to my face, pressing gently to transfer the oil to my skin. I wait a few seconds to help the oil to warm and sink in before moving to a new section.

If you do not care for the idea of transferring oil with your hands, try dotting oil around your face using your index finger and then press your hands to your face to warm and disperse the oil. Hold your hands in place for a few seconds then move to a new section of your face. Be careful that the oil is being evenly dispersed around your face when using this method.

Oil feels so great on your skin it is easy to over-apply. Keep in mind you only need a few drops of oil. Fight the urge to slather it on. I always start with one drop for targeted treatment oils and three drops for full face oil.

Face Oil has gained tremendous popularity because, when well done and applied properly, it can make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin. At 56 years old, I have gone completely over to oil based skin care products. I use oil almost exclusively for all of my skin care needs. My skin look younger and healthier than it has in years, with a glow that only quality, nutrient rich oil can give. Whether you’ve been avoiding face oil or have tried it in the past and not liked the results, it’s worth giving Face Oil a try.
