Hyaluronics, Peptides, Vitamin C and Anti-Oxidants – Active Ingredients to Understand

When we first started in all natural formulating we struggled to locate effective all natural supporting ingredients to use in our anti-aging products. We could find great ingredient compounds, but it seemed they all came in hazardous paraben based preservatives or the allergy laden phenoxyethanol, making them a firm “no” for use in Brown Barn’s uber-clean skincare lines.

We were thrilled to eventually discover suppliers who naturally and safely source key active ingredients that will deliver the rapid-fire results our customers had been asking for!

Brown Barn Botanicals age defying moisturizing product trio is designed to provide spa level skincare results in a 100% natural, healthy and safe formulation for a maximum skincare glow while still working with our healthy and effective, glow-maintaining cleansers, face oils, and serums.

Products featuring any key ingredient alone are great but when you combine ingredients that work to repair and maintain over the long haul with ingredients that show quick results, you have a win.

The age defying product trio rounds out Brown Barn Botanicals 100% natural, healthy skincare program with three distinct, highly formulated products designed to fill the gap between a great all natural skincare program and a spa-level prestige skincare line:

1) Hydrating Botanic Elixir, a liquid spray-on moisturizer. Think of this as a primer/booster for your serums, face oils, and cream moisturizers. Botanical Elixir can be used after toner or in place of toner. I use both because toner brings different elements than Botanical Essence. You can learn more about both by visiting the product pages at

2) Rose Hip & Shea Bio-Complex Creme. This is that heavier facial creme our customers had been asking for. Think of it as your “night” creme (but can be used morning and night if you are in need of extra support or just love a heavy creme).  If you already use Brown Barn Botanicals lighter Primrose and Oak Facial Moisturizer don’t despair, simply use Primrose & Oak in the AM and add Rose Hip & Shea in the PM – it’s a match made in skincare heaven!

3) Arctic Bloom Restorative Eye Creme. The eye cream you’ve been waiting for. Super formulated to address the unique needs of the tender eye area and featuring a unique new Glyco-Protein direct from the Antarctic Sea to fight lines and protect from aging. This product acts more like an eye “mask” in that it coats and stays put while actively working to draw and hold moisture to cells.

What does this mean for you? It means you can now have all of the bells and whistles of the large skincare houses but you can have them safely in a truly 100% natural formulation that includes Brown Barn Botanicals amazing hand harvested botanic infusions.

This also means there are some new words in our skincare vocabulary: Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Vitamin C to name a few.

Hylaruonic 1E

Hyaluronic Acid/Sodium hyaluronate:

Hyaluronic Acid is a compound that occurs naturally as a youth-supporting element of every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations occurring in areas such as skin, cartilage and eyes.  Hyaluronic Acid is the natural gel between skin cells that serves as a  cell protecting water reservoir for cells. It has an immense capacity for attracting and holding water to skin.

As we age, skin loses Hyaluronic Acid and the ability to hold sufficient water.  The loss of Hyaluronic Acid from your skin as you age results in a loss of firmness, decreased elasticity, and increasingly drier skin, which is more susceptible to the formation of lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

Feeding new Hyaluronic Acid to skin may help hydrate skin’s intercellular reservoir, raising skin’s moisture level, and smoothing down age lines while plumping and softly firming skin surface. One challenge faced by skincare formulators is how to create a Hyaluronic Acid with small enough molecules to penetrate deeply enough into skin to make a real difference.

Enter Sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is an all natural Hyaluronic Acid that has a small molecular size and is able to hold more water than any other natural substance—up to 1,000 times its weight in water! Its small size means this super-acid can penetrate deeply into skin to attract and maintain water reserves. Sodium hyaluronate also promotes blood circulation and nutrient absorption in the skin to support a normal metabolism.

The intense moisturization that comes with topical application of Sodium hyaluronate allows for the skin to operate at a higher capacity to provide a better defense against environmental assaults and other aging effects. Thanks to its super-sized hydrating properties, Sodium hyaluronate will result in smoother, softer skin with decreased wrinkles and an all-around fuller appearance.

polypeptides 1000x500

When collagen breaks down, short segments of amino acids are formed. These are the tiny proteins and active molecules known as peptides. When collagen is depleted by age and environmental factors, including sunlight, it is not fully replaced. As a result, smooth, young skin slowly becomes thinner and wrinkled over time.

Peptides are fragments of proteins. On their own, peptides are made up of amino acids. When amino acids are combined in certain formations they create specific peptides (and there are hundreds of peptides), and when peptides are formed in a certain way, they make specific proteins.

Proteins are the fundamental building blocks of skin. Without peptides, skin doesn’t remain intact and the result is a loss of firmness, appearance of wrinkles, texture changes, and skin that doesn’t bounce back as it once did.

Peptides “tell” skin that it’s time to produce more collagen. They work as a trigger.

What’s so fascinating about peptides is that abundant research has clearly shown they can help revitalize those building blocks and, in turn, help revitalize skin when used in conjunction with other supporting skincare ingredients.

As a Peptide bonus, we’ve included 100% natural, healthy Pea Polypeptides – Pea Peptide is a complete source of essential amino acids, most notably lysine, which is an essential building block for human cells. It is this unique balance of nutrients that give this nourishing peptide its beneficial anti-aging, cell regenerative, antioxidant, conditioning and strengthening properties.

Vitamin C & Anti-oxidants

Anti-oxidants protect skin by limiting the production of free radicals. Think of Free Radicals as little pac-man type oxidizing cell damagers. Anti-oxidants in skin care products can do a lot for the health and appearance of your skin by battling free radicals, resulting in reducing the signs of aging.

Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant. Vitamin C can donate electrons in order to neutralize free radicals created in skin after oxidative stress. (Oxidative stress = sun damage.)  Vitamin C can’t protect skin like an SPF but it can minimize the damage you can’t see.

Vitamin C is a factor in stabilizing and creating collagen molecules, meaning that it’s one of the most reliable all natural anti-aging ingredients on the market.

If you read above about Peptides and how they work to stimulate collagen production you’ll have a BIG Aha moment right now! While the Peptides are telling skin to make more collagen, Vitamin C is telling it to make quality collagen.

In addition to its collagen loving benefits, Vitamin C can aid in skin’s ability to heal itself. This proves beneficial for those looking to reduce red and brown spots.

Its ability to boost collagen and reduce tough spots makes Vitamin C and any other anti-oxidant a skincare super-hero!

In Summary

A truly great formulation is the sum of its parts.

Other “super” natural ingredients include a Glyco-Protein from the Antarctic Sea, a dedicated collection of Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, fresh botanical infusions, and more.
